“Our Creativity Differentiates Us!" is one of our core values here at ICS, and our NorCal project teams have showcased a prime example of their creativity in our ongoing dig and haul project (turned dig, treat and haul) in Marysville, CA. The original scope of this project called for the excavation and disposal of approximately 1,400 cubic yards of lead-impacted soil deemed Non-RCRA Hazardous (California-Hazardous) requiring disposal at a Class I landfill. However, our team proposed an alternate approach to treat the soil onsite first and later dispose of the treated soil as Non-Hazardous to a nearby local landfill delivering value in the form of a) reducing overall costs, and b) de-risking the Generator and stakeholders from long-term liability associated with disposal of hazardous waste at a Class I landfill. Way to stand out and add value team!

In a recent ICS Safety Short filmed in the hilly terrain of Southern California, Laborers Jimmy and Ezekiel spoke on the important role of spotters on construction sites and the risks they face. Spotters provide a necessary visual perspective that aids vehicle operators to maneuver safely, but by doing so they potentially expose themselves to more risk. Spotters are essential for maintaining safety on project sites with heavy equipment operation and other vehicular traffic such as end-dump trucks used for import/export of material to project sites. To spot safely, one must develop a remarkable sense of awareness of their own and others’ surroundings, both for themselves and their team. Thank you, Jimmy and Ezekiel, for emphasizing the means and methods to keep our teams and spotters safe!

In other recent ICS news – our SoCal office team recently held a Baby Sprinkle for our beloved Payroll Specialist of over 5 years, Corrie! It was an early afternoon celebration adorned with colorful balloons, gift-giving, and great company! Although the pictured dump-truck is much smaller than we’re used to working with, we still managed to load it with tasty “dirt” cupcakes (handmade by our Accounting Manager, Patty) as a sweet treat as we celebrated Corrie's new addition to her family.

This Baby Sprinkle is one of the many examples of our ICS culture. We are a tight-knit crew and consider ourselves extremely lucky to be a part of such special moments in each other’s lives. At ICS we see every day as an opportunity to celebrate one another which is something we cherish about our ICS family and will hold on to.

Corrie, we wish you all the best and can’t wait to watch your family grow!

This April, our safety topic is on Mental Risk Assessments – a crucial component of workplace safety! Engaging in mental risk assessments not only prevents incidents but can also save lives. This process involves pinpointing potential hazards within one's environment, supported by a thorough review of job/activity hazard analysis sheets, completed area-specific inspections, safety data sheets, equipment operating manuals, and other means of identifying hazards.

Mental Risk Assessments must be completed prior to beginning work, throughout the day, and every time there is a change from the initially outlined task execution process. When changes occur to processes, equipment, or facilities on-site, it is vital that employees and/or subcontractors communicate effectively and assess potential hazards around them.

Before beginning the workday or the project crew transitions to a new task, it is vital to conduct a mental risk assessment to identify potential new hazards. Taking an extra moment to analyze your environment and improve situational awareness truly makes a difference. Remember: if you see something, say something!

Our Expanded Niche – When ICS was established in 1999, our Co-Founders set out to create a different kind of construction company while focusing on soil and groundwater remediation. Drawing from our first 15 years of extensive self-perform experience in those works, we have expanded our niche over these last 10 years to include the construction of solutions to environmental challenges in soil, vapor, air and water (groundwater, stormwater, and municipal/industrial wastewater).

ICS has remained unwavering in its commitment to delivering superior service, whether it involves a site remediation project, to a stormwater capture project, or to constructing a wastewater treatment facility. Our expanded niche (service lines) allows us the privilege of serving our clients better by being a one-stop shop to construct solutions to all their environmental challenges. It has also helped us build what is a more sustainable organization, a benefit for all of us in the ICS family today and for those in the next generation!
